Located in Chicago’s Fulton Market Historic District, The Emily Hotel Chicago includes 159 guestrooms; five event venues, including a landscaped roof terrace; lobby lounge and signature restaurant, and rooftop bar. The design concept is inspired by the establishment in 1937 of The New Bauhaus in Chicago and its enduring legacy of modern design and architecture in Chicago. The Emily Hotel also houses Chicago’s very first Stumptown Coffee Roasters.
The LEED Silver certification is supported with features including public transportation access, recycled content, on-site waste management, motion sensor lighting and water efficient landscaping.
Creative Thinking Preserves the Historic Façade
During construction of the new luxury hotel, the existing 2-story historic masonry façade of an early-1900’s cheese factory remained stabilized on site. Power worked closely with the Chicago Department of Planning and Development Historic Preservation Division and Chicago Department of Water Management to preserve the façade without damaging the 100+ year-old 30” water main directly adjacent to the facade. Power directly sourced both the structural engineer and trade partner to develop the design-build solution of utilizing shipping containers to stabilize the façade. Ultimately, the shipping containers became the most economical and schedule efficient solution that met the approval of all departments and the needs of the construction team.The new masonry structure is enclosed with a steel and glass window system, running slab to slab, providing an abundance of exterior light for a bright interior.
